Tahquamenon Falls State Park is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan west of Paradise along M123. It is the second largest state park in Michigan after Porcupine Mountain State Park. The heart of the park is the Tahquamenon River and the two sets of falls. Tannin leached from the surrounding cedar swamps give the river a brown color.
The two sets of falls are the Upper Falls, pictured here, and the Lower Falls, about 4 miles downriver. The Upper Falls have a drop of about 48 feet and during spring runoff can have a volume of 50,000 gallons a second. This makes it the third largest waterfall, by volume, east of the Mississippi in the United States.
Here you see the falls have mostly frozen over. The typical brown of the Tahquamenon River can been in the part that has not frozen over while icicles hang from both banks where water seeps from the ground.

Michigan Photography - Pure Michigan 3/24/14
I developed an interest in photography at a young age, often following my father around while he took pictures. The boats intrigued me and for a time I wanted to work on them. My career took me down a different path, but I never lost my interest in the boats. In 2011 I combined my two interests, loading my camera in my car and chasing the boats around the lakes. I hope to highlight the hardworking ships and...

Cool catch of the icicles! Feels like they are frozen in motion! fv :)
Gales Of November replied:
This is the first time I've been here where the falls have been frozen. My previous winter trips it hadn't been cold long enough for a view like this.
Aaron Whittemore
I hope you weren't standing on that ice, Chris. A very dramatic Winter scene, you have captured. V/F
Gales Of November replied:
I was not, Aaron. Although I did see people walking on it while I was up top. I did hike down a closed portion of the trail and was at the farthest point along it. While I was up top a couple of guys hopped the fence and walked out onto the falls though.
