Cold, foreboding, and beautiful! The red really makes it pop.

Thank you, William. There wasn't much other than white here. I hear this building is going to receive a new coat of paint in the near future.

Artist's Description

A lighthouse has stood watch over the entrance to the Grand River since 1839. Currently, there are three lights here. They are located in Grand Haven State Park and recently the city of Grand Haven obtained ownership of the structures. Some restoration work was done in 2013 and will continue in 2014.

The South Pierhead Inner Light was constructed in 1905 and continues to be used as a navigational aid. It has a height of 36 feet. The top of the light is visible just behind the ice piled on the north side of the Entrance Light.

The South Pierhead Entrance Light is located at the end of the 1,100 foot long south pier. It contains a light at a height of 36 feet, but also housed the foghorn. The Entrance Light sits on a piece of concrete that looks like a ship's bow. This is to help it weather storms. Here, ice encases the north side of the light, indicating the direction of the prevailing winds.

In 2011 I combined my two interests, loading my camera in my car and chasing the boats around the lakes. I hope to highlight the hardworking ships and...
