Description
The Edward B. Greene was constructed for the Cleveland Cliffs Steamship Company in 1951 and christened in 1952. She was the first of what was to be known as the AAA Korea class boats. Unlike her sisters, her forward pilothouse had three decks to accommodate corporate passengers.
Cleveland Cliffs sold her to Rouge Steel Corporation who renamed her Benson Ford (III). Rouge Steel Corp was a division of the Ford Corporation. In 1989 Ford shut down Rouge Steel operations and sold the ship to Interlake Steamship Company formed Lakes Shipping Company to deliver iron to the Rouge plant. Interlake renamed her Kay E. Barker after the wife of James R. Barker who was affiliated with Interlake.
During the 1975-76 layup, 120 feet were added to her bringing her length to 767 feet and a 250 foot self-unloading boom was added during the 1980-81 layup. In early 2012 the Kaye E. Barker’s steam turbine fell silent and was replaced with a new diesel engine. She returned to service in August of the same year.
Her length of 767 feet and beam of 70 allow her to carry 25,900 tons of cargo.
The Ste. Claire was built in 1910 for The Detroit, Belle Isle and Windsor Ferry Company to run passenger between Detroit and Boblo Island which the company had purchased in 1901 for use as an amusement park. The Ste. Claire was one of the last propeller driven excursion steamships to operate on the Great Lakes.
She ran for 81 years until the park closed in 1993. She is privately owned and undergoing restoration.
She, and her sister ship the Columbia, appeared in Transformers: Age of Extinction.
Here, the Kaye E. Barker passes the Ste. Claire on the Rouge River just below the Dix Street Bridge.
