Mission Point is located on the Saint Mary's River south of Sault Saint Marie. It is a popular spot for boat watching as boats approach and leave the Soo Locks. There is a small restaurant at the north end and the Sugar Island Ferry leaves from there too.
The Roger Blough was built in two parts and was scheduled for a summer 1971 launch. A fire in the engine room delayed that launch and 4 crewmen died from asphyxiation.
She set sail in 1972. She was designed to carry taconite and has a unique look. She was laid up from 1981 until 1987 when she again reentered service. She has experienced mishaps along the way including a few collisions and a lost rudder.
Her construction gives her a unique look. Her unloading boom is located in the stern, giving her deck an uncluttered look. With a beam equaling that of the thousand footer at 105 feet, but a length of only 858 feet she has a squat look. This combination gives her a capacity of 43,900 tons of cargo.
I developed an interest in photography at a young age, often following my father around while he took pictures. From that I learned the basics and purchased my first camera while still in high school. I learned more through reading and trial and error. My first formal training came in 2013 when I took a basic photography class at a community college. During high school I became fascinated with the freighters that sailed on the lakes. The boats intrigued me and for a time I wanted to work on them. My career took me down a different path, but I never lost my interest in the boats.
