The first Lake Michigan lighthouse in Michigan was built in St. Joseph on the bluffs overlooking the lake in 1832. In 1846 the light was moved to the end f a wooden pier extending into Lake Michigan. Over the next 57 years the light was upgraded twice and in 1907 the outer light was added.
The original light continued operation until 1924 when the American Red Cross began using the building as their local headquarters. This lasted until 1954, at which time they sold the building to the city of St. Joseph. The city replaced the building with a parking lot in 1955.
The piers still remain and the lights are still in operation and function as a range light system. The outer light sits atop a 30 foot steel structure while the inner light is a larger building. I developed an interest in photography at a young age, often following my father around while he took pictures. From that I learned the basics and purchased my first camera while still in high school. I learned more through reading and trial and error. My first formal training came in 2013 when I took a basic photography class at a community college. During high school I became fascinated with the freighters that sailed on the lakes. The boats intrigued me and for a time I wanted to work on them. My career took me down a different path, but I never lost my interest in the boats.
