Description
When she was launched in 1911, the Col. James M. Schoonmaker, with a length of 617 feet, was the largest ship on the Great Lakes. The Shenango Furnace Company made her the flagship of their fleet and broke many records in her first year of service.
Her triple expansion steam engine served her until 1955 when it was replaced by a steam turbine.
In 1969, after 58 years of service, Shenango sold her to the Interlake Steamship Company who in turn chartered her to the Republic Steel Corporation. When the agreement with RSC ended, Interlake sold her to Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company who renamed her the Willis B. Boyer of the company’s president.
The Willis B. Boyer spend seven years working for Cleveland Cliffs company before being laid up in 1980. Another seven years passed before the city of Toledo purchased her to use as a centerpiece for their International Park. In 2011 she was repainted in her original colors and her original name restored to her. In 2012, she was towed downriver to the National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo Ohio, where she still resides today.
She has a length of 617 feet and a beam of 64 feet enabling her to carry 12,200 tons of cargo.
If you wish to visit, tours of the ship can be arranged at the National Museum of the Great Lakes. As of June, 2018 admission is $3.00 for museum members and $5.00 for non-members.
