Description

The Adirondack was launched in May of 1943. Sailing for the C. Reiss Coal Company, three days later she was renamed Richard J. Reiss.

In 1964 she underwent conversion to a self-unloader. Although sailing for a coal company, she was able to carry iron ore and limestone as well.

Although she was sold to American Steamship in June, 1969, she continued to sail as part of the Reiss Coal Company fleet until 1986 the that line was merged American Steamship’s fleet.

She then sailed for the Erie Sand Steamship company who shortened her name to Richard Reiss, believing that it was unlucky for a ship to have a name consisting of 13 letters.

She entered winter layup in December, 2001. Oglebay Norton purchased the Erie Sand and Gravel Company and the ships of their fleet took over routes which the Reiss and she remained in layup

Olgebay Norton experienced financial difficulties which led to its collapse and she was purchased by Grand River Navigation in 2004. She sailed that season with her Reiss name and her old colors. The only indication of the new owners was the painting of her smoke stack in the GRN colors.

At the end of 2004 she underwent her 5 year inspection was repainted in her Lower Lakes colors. Two weeks later she was renamed Manistee. She sailed until the end of the 2017 season when she entered layup and faces an uncertain future.

She has a length of 620.5 feet and a beam of 60.25 feet. This allows her to carry 14,900 tons of cargo.
