The Presque Isle is a tug/barge combination. Unlike many tug/barge combinations both the tug and the barge are named Presque Isle.
The tug was launched on December 12th, 1972. The barge was built in two sections by two different shipyards and launched earlier that year on July 27th.
Her maiden voyage took her to Two Harbors, Minnesota where she loaded 51,038 tons of taconite. After that, she went into winter layup.
The Presque Isle is one of thirteen thousand foot ships on the lake and the second to be built. The total cost of construction was $35 million.
With a length of 1000 feet, a beam of 104’07” and a depth of 46’06”, she can has a cargo capacity of 57,500 tons.
