Description
Four Mile Beach is south of Sault Saint Marie on the Saint Mary's River. It is a popular place for boat watching as you can get a good, unobstructed view of the passing boats.
The slope of the beach is very slight. As the lake boats approach, the water is drawn out exposing more of the sand. After passing, the water rushes back creating waves that can reach two and a half feet in height.
The American Courage was launched in 1979 as the Fred R White Jr. for the Columbia Transportation Division of Oglebay Norton. She operated for them until 2004 when Oglebay Norton filed for bankruptcy.
In 2006 she was purchased by American Steamship Company and renamed American Courage. With a length of 636 feet and a beam of 68 feet, she can carry 23,800 tons of cargo.
