Description
The George A. Stinson was launched in 1978 and named in honor of National Steel Company’s CEO. She was the first of National Steel’s self-unloaders as well as the first 1000 foot vessel of the company.
Skar-Ore Corporation took ownership of the vessel in 1986. She operated until early 2003 when she entered layup. In November 2003 she sailed again for the rest of the 2003 season. In January of 2004 she once again entered layup. During this time she was renamed American Spirt to honor “the spirit of the company’s workers and the spirit of America.” She has sailed for American Steamship Company since then.
Three months after launch, she struck a wall in the Poe Lock at Sault Ste. Marie causing an estimated $200,000 in damage. Early the next year she became icebound on Lake Huron. She operated without notable incident until 1983 when her self-unloading boom collapsed. For the next 5 months she continued to operate until the self-unloading boom was repaired. The next year she ran aground near Marine City, Michigan due to ice. Twelve years later in 1996 she ran aground of Gros Cap in Lake Superior while trying to anchor in heavy fog.
Her length of 1004 feet, beam of 105 feet and depth of 50 feet giver the ability to transport over 62,000 tons of cargo.
Here, the American Spirit has passed under the Blue Water Bridge and heads down the Saint Clair River.
