Description
Built in Bay City, Michigan, the Charles L. Hutchinson entered service with the Pioneer Steamship Company on September 24, 1952.
At the end of the 1961 season she was sold to Ford Motor Company and renamed the Ernest R. Breech.
In 1988 she was purchased by Kinsman Lines and renamed the Kinsman Independent for whom she sailed until being laid up in December of 2002.
In 2004 McKeil Work Boats Ltd purchased her, and then sold to Voyageur Marine Transport Ltd in 2005 at which time she was renamed Voyageur Independent.
In 2007 ownership passed to lower Lakes Towing Ltd and in February 2008, they renamed her Ojibway.
Of interest, the original engines had been installed in the Alcoa Protector which was sunk by the Japanese in 1943. They were later salvaged and installed on the Charles L. Hutchinson.
