Description
The Algorail was launched on December 13, 1967 in Collingwood, Ontario. Sailing for Algoma Central, she can carry, sand, gypsum, quartzite, grain, salt, iron ore, coal, aggregates, salt and more.
On October 6, 1972 high winds pushed her into a pier at Holland, Michigan. The collision opened a 12-foot gash in her bow that caused flooding and the ship sank. The hole was patched and the ship was refloated and put back into service.
On April 20, 1999 she ran aground in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Algorail was not damaged by this grounding, but during the attempt to free her the tugs involved damaged two of the city docks with their prop wash.
With a length of 640 feet and a beam of 72 feet, she can carry 23,750 tons of cargo.
Here the Algorail waits for winter layup in Sarnia, Ontario.
